Car Rentals New Zealand

Terms and Conditions

  • In New Zealand, rental car drivers must be at least 21 years of age and hold a valid licence (NZ or overseas) to drive a manual car, even if the hire car is automatic. By law, this licence must be sighted at the commencement of the hire.
  • The minimum period of hire is 3 days, however you may enquire about 1 and 2 day hires (these are subject to special rates and availability of vehicles). The period of hire is calculated from the time of pickup to the time of dropoff on a daily or part thereof basis. If a vehicle is returned late, you may be charged for an extra day (or days, if more than one).
  • If you are arriving by air, we can meet you at the airport prior to completing the necessary paperwork and transfer of fees. We will also transfer you to the airport to catch your flight after the vehicle has been dropped off. Please note, however, that after 7 pm an after-hours fee of ~NZ$30 will apply.
  • If travelling between islands, you will need to take the car on an inter-island ferry. You will need to make arrangements for ferry bookings as part of your travel plans or we will be happy to make these bookings for you.
  • Autorent has depots in Christchurch, Auckland, and Queenstown. If your travel plans require you to pick up or drop off your vehicle at other locations, we may be able to assist, but a relocation fee will apply.
  • The cost of insurance for your vehicle is included in the daily rate. You are however liable for an insurance excess of $NZ1500 in the event of an accident or damage to the vehicle. This excess is held as a bond for the duration of the hire, or may be waived by payment of $NZ12 per day ($NZ84 minimum).
  • When picking up your vehicle, you will be asked to sign a standard car rental agreement, which outlines the terms and conditions which apply to the hire of your vehicle. This is required.
  • If you have a child who requires a baby seat or a booster seat, we can provide these for a nominal fee for the duration of the hire.
